How to Write an Australian Resume

Australian CVs are structured completely differently from Japanese resumes. Understanding these key differences is the first step to landing a job.

Standard CV Structure

  1. Personal Details: Name, phone, email, suburb (no full address needed)
  2. Profile / Summary: 3–4 lines summarising your strengths
  3. Work Experience: Newest first — job title, company, dates, bullet-point duties
  4. Education: Most recent qualification first
  5. Skills: Languages, IT tools, certifications
  6. References: "Available upon request" is perfectly acceptable

Top 5 Common Mistakes

  • 📸 Including a photo
  • 📄 Making it too long (3+ pages)
  • 🔤 Not proofreading for spelling and grammar
  • 📋 Vague descriptions ("worked at a café" → be specific)
  • 🔗 Forgetting to add LinkedIn or a portfolio link

Think of your CV as an advertisement for yourself. Use specific achievements, numbers and skills — don't be shy about showcasing what you can do.

How to Write Work Experience

Always start bullet points with a strong action verb.

  • ❌ "Worked at a café"
  • ✅ "Prepared food, operated POS system, handled customer enquiries in a high-volume café environment"

Cover Letters

Cover letters matter for professional and full-time roles. Keep it to one page and explain clearly why you want this specific job. For casual WHV roles, it's often optional but always makes a good impression.
